Vicky Gregg Speaker Profile
Greggs next vacation, albeit short, will be in May when she plans to see the Kentucky Derby in Louisville. She and her husband attend the event every year. I got into the horse business when I lived in Kentucky, she says. We owned horses and we enjoy going back to the track.
Her short vacation wont interfere with an important luncheon shell attend in Chattanooga on May 5 when shell be honored as the 2009 Tennessee Woman of Distinction by the American Lung Association of Tennessee. In good company, others previously having received the prestigious award include Oscar-winning actress Patricia Neal, Challenger Center founder June Scobee Rogers, Tennessee historian and author Wilma Dykeman, and University of Tennessee Lady Vols head basketball coach Pat Summitt.
A dedicated Lady Vols fan, Gregg says she and her mom, the late Edna Brown, followed the team. Pat Summitt is an awesome person and has accomplished so much, says Gregg, noting that she has a Pat Summitt- autographed basketball in her collection. Ive read all her books and notice there are similarities in what she does and what I do. Our work situations demand we work together as a team and come together for common goals and objectives. I identify with a lot of those things and I also enjoy the competitive aspects.
As a youngster, Gregg developed an interest in nursing and eventually graduated from the Erlanger School of Nursing.
The first time I thought about being a nurse was when I was 9 years old, says Gregg. My cousin had cerebral palsy. His mom would bring him to our house and I would help him do exercises. I would try to make it fun for him. I remember feeling good about that. Also, I had an aunt who was a nurse and saw her as a role model.
Greggs first job as a registered nurse charted the course for her position today as she rose through the ranks to become CEO of the states biggest health insurance company. She was vice present of Humana Corporation before joining BlueCross in 1996 to head the TennCare division. She was named president and CEO in 2001.
I never thought this is what Id end up doing, she says. I thought I would be a nurse, wife and mother. Id work part-time as a nurse and stay with my children. As it turned out, I had a child, but could have no more children. The plans I wrote for myself changed.
Gregg, whose son is now 26, says she then became more curious about her role as a nurse, and developed a desire to make a difference. Having the courage to believe in yourself and knowing that you have more to offer, whatever the odds, helped me to know that I could make a difference, she says.
Gregg says her father is her No.1 role model. He still has tremendous influence over me, she says of her late father, Jack Brown. He told me I could do whatever I wanted to do.
Though she has no immediate plans to retire, Gregg says she looks forward to it in the future. There are a number of things Id like to accomplish before Im through here, she adds. But I look forward to that time in my life. I dont think Id be good sitting at home. I like art so maybe Ill explore that side of myself.
