claude_steeleProfessor Claude Steele has devoted his professional life to studying stereotypes. He was able to address how they affect people as the speaker at the University of Michigan’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Summit.

The event was held on Tuesday in the Michigan League Ballroom. Steele previously worked at UM and he was able to share how to successfully create diverse communities.

He also said that stereotypes do affect people’s performance. In addition to his presentation, there was an update on the work that has been done at the school in relation to improving diversity, equity and inclusion.

The event was from November 16-19 held to recognize the findings of a project related to the history of slavery. It was broadcast on local Princeton channels.

There were a variety of panels, discussions and performances. Morrison had a previous relationship with Princeton, having received an honorary degree from the school in 2013.

Morrison has been one of the top novelists in the country. She received national recognition in 1988 when she won the Pulitzer Prize and American Book Award for Beloved.

The book was adapted for a feature film in 1998. In 1993, Morrison received the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Heshel_webAs their chair of Jewish Studies, Susannah Heschel is well known by many at Dartmouth University. She was well-received as a speaker the school’s 10th annual Frederick M. Schweitzer Lecture.

The event took place on November 7th at 6 p.m. in Kelly Commons room 5B. Heschel’s presentation was titled, “When Jesus Was an Aryan: Christians, Nazis and the Bible.”

The lecture was preceded by a commemoration of Kristallnacht. The entire lecture was free and open to the public.

Heschel is Dartmouth’s Eli Black Professor and the chair of the Jewish Studies program. She is the author of two books and over 100 articles.

displayThe European Forum for Geography and Statistics held their conference November 2-3. Esri founder Jack Dangermond was the keynote speaker.

Dangermond talked about the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. He also addressed how Esri’s location intelligence technology can help countries meet the UN’s established standards.

The EGFS was originally established by National Statistics Institutions in the Nordic countries. They now work with people in over 40 states and territories.

With Esri, Dangermond founded the world’s leading company in spatial analytics. He still serves as the organization’s president and works out of their headquarters in Redlands, California.

Dangermond has master’s degrees from the University of Minnesota and Harvard University. He is the recipient of 13 honorary doctoral degrees.

The event was held at the Country Club of Sioux Falls. Goss discussed the agriculture industry and talked about the potential effect of changes to NAFTA.

Registration to attend was $30. The event was also streamed live by The Sioux Falls Business Journal.

Goss works at Creighton University as the Jack A. MacAllister chair in regional economics, director of the Institute for Economic Inquiry and professor of economics. He is also the director of The Goss Institute for Economic Research.

539wDirector Mary Mazzio has used her skills as a filmmaker to shine a light on the problem of sex trafficking. She talked about what she’s learned as the keynote speaker at the Safe Harbour Conference.

The event was held on October 27th in Saratoga Springs, New York at Skidmore College. Law enforcement officers, social workers and counselors from around the region attended.

There were six different workshops that were partially funded by the state of New York. Saratoga Center for the Family Safe Habour/Law Enforcement Coordinator John Kelly organized the event.

This year, Mazzio released the documentary, I Am Jane Doe. The film chronicles the legal battle that American mothers are waging for their daughters who were sex trafficked.

The event takes place April 21-24 at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta. There will be 18,000 high school students in attendance to garner knowledge for college and their careers.

Abboud should have an inspiring story to tell about his journey through the fashion industry. He currently serves as a member of the DECA National Advisory Board and is the honorary chair of their Executive Mentor Program.

It was held November 6-7. White talked about the astounding rebirth of the global record manufacturing industry.

In addition to hearing White speak, conference attendees got to tour his Third Man Pressing record plant. Run-DMC’s Darryl McReynolds and Record Store Day co-founder Michael Kurtz also spoke.

White is best known as the former lead singer and guitarist of The White Stripes. He is now a solo artist and has released the studio albums, Blunderbuss and Lazaretto.

lucas-geralyn-new-bioCancer survivor and author Geralyn Lucas was recently able to be a source of inspiration and encouragement. She was the keynote speaker at the Little Company of Mary Hospital’s second annual cancer survivor program.

The event was held on November 4th from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Alsip, Illinois. In addition to Lucas’ opening keynote, there were a variety of breakout sessions available.

Some of the topics addressed included cancer patient nutrition and life changes post-cancer treatment. Individual tickets to attend were $25.

Lucas was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was 27 years old. She wrote about her experiences in Why I Wore Lipstick to My Mastectomy.
