43rd NAACP Image Awards - Press Room - Los AngelesThe Alzheimer’s Association Connecticut Chapter is hosting the fifth-annual Celebrating Hope gala on May 5th. Actor Hill Harper serves as keynote speaker.

The event takes place at the I’escale at the Delamar Greenwich Harbor. Harper will talk about his journey as a cancer survivor, cancer research and what increased Alzheimer’s research can do.

In addition to his presentation, there will be dinner, music and live and silent auctions. Individual tickets are $350 and the event has raised over $1 million for Alzheimer’s and dementia care and research since its inception.

Bob-VilaThe Boston Architectural College is holding commencement with a special guest next month. Home improvement guru and alumnus Bob Vila will speak on May 19th.

The event takes place at Boston’s Old South Church. Boston Architectural College was founded over 125 years ago and offers degrees in architecture, interior architecture, landscape architecture and design studies.

Graduates have limited access to tickets and all other guests will be placed neighboring Gordon Chapel. The evening before commencement there will be an awards ceremony.

Vila rose to fame in the 1980s as the founding host of PBS’ “This Old House.” After attending BAC, he won the Better Homes and Gardens “Heritage House of 1978.”

susan-kegleyIn February, a pollinator forum was held at Oregon State University’s Extension office. Pesticide Research Institute founder Susan Kegley served as keynote speaker.

The event was hosted by Pollinator Project Rogue Valley and Beyond Toxics. Kegley discussed that fruits and vegetables we eat can be tested for neonics.

She also talked about a report she and her colleagues conducted on the fruits and vegetables eaten by Washington D.C. lawmakers. Several recommendations were made during the forum.

Kegley founded the Pesticide Research Institute in 2006. From 1998-2009, she worked as a staff scientist at the Pesticide Action Network.

hqdefaultOn March 23rd, sociologist Harry Edwards paid a visit to UMass Amherst. He was the keynote speaker for the Mark H. McCormack Sport Innovators lecture.

His talk took place at 6:30 p.m. at the Mahar Auditorium at UMass Amherst’s School of Management. It was titled, “The Ideological Framing of Black Athlete Activism – 1990-2017: Where Do We Go From Here?”

Edwards assumed the role of executive-in-residence. He spoke with students and faculty throughout the day in addition to giving his lecture on sport management leadership.

Edwards is a Professor Emeritus in UC Berkeley’s sociology department. Much of his career has centered on the African-American athlete experience and he has consulted the San Francisco 49ers and Golden State Warriors.

Former U.S. spy agency contractor Edward Snowden is interviewedThe K(NO)W Identity Conference is kicking off on May 15th in Washington D.C. The keynote speaker is NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden.

Snowden will give his presentation via a live stream from Russia. He will also participate in a live Q&A session with the audience.

Over 150 speakers will come through the Ronald Reagan Building at the International Trade Center over the conference’s three days. Topics like biometrics, identity access management, fraud prevention and identity verification will be addressed.

Snowden uncovered the NSA’s private surveillance network of U.S. citizens in 2013. That led to widespread changes across the technology industry for top companies like Apple and Facebook.

NASA-Astronaut-Wendy-LawrenceThe University of West Florida held their 16th Annual Women’s Studies Conference last month. Astronaut Wendy Lawrence served as keynote speaker.

The event took place on March 24th from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the UWF Conference Center. At midday, there was a luncheon where the Mary F. Rogers Faculty Award was handed out.

The title of Lawrence’s talk was “There Goes One – My Journey to Success in a Man’s World.” All activities during the day were free and open to the public.

Lawrence was the first female graduate of the United States Naval Academy to travel into space. She was selected by NASA in 1992 and became a Mission Specialist.

Overall, Lawrence made four different space flights and logged 1,200 space hours. […]

maxresdefaultThe 42nd annual Northwest Indian Youth Conference took place at the beginning of the month. The keynote speaker was photographer Matika Wilbur.

Festivities ran April 2-6 at the Winthrop Sun Mountain Lodge in Winthrop, Washington. The theme was “Inspiring Indigenous Interconnection.”

There were several other speakers in addition to Wilbur. Around 300 youth and their chaperones from the Colville Tribes attended.

Wilbur’s current Project 562 is designed to photograph citizens from each federally recognized tribe in the U.S. She is a top photographer from the Pacific Northwest.

Wilbur’s work has been featured in the Seattle Art Museum, the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture and The Tacoma Art Museum. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the Brooks Insitute of Photography.

The seventh-annual event started at 7:30 a.m. last Thursday at the University Club’s tenth-floor banquet facility. There were three high school seniors who received renewable scholarships.

The goal for those given scholarships is that they will come back to West Michigan to apply their talents after their studies are complete. Zee is quite familiar with the University Club, having worked there for over a decade.

Zee serves as the meteorologist on top ABC programming like “Good Morning America” and “World News Tonight.” She originally joined ABC as the weekend meteorologist on GMA in 2011.
