20110722-Canadas-Tar-Sands---Pope-webFormer Sierra Club Executive Director Carl Pope has devoted his entire life to issues related to climate. That makes him the ideal choice to speak at the Saint Louis Climate Summit.

The event runs from April 22-24 and Pope’s presentation takes place on Chafeitz Arena on April 23rd. The Climate Summit is just one component in a yearlong Bicentennial Celebration for Saint Louis University.

Climate science and related disciplines will be explored over the three days. There are several other speakers and presentations scheduled.

Pope worked with the Sierra Club for nearly 30 years before stepping down in 2012. He is the co-author of the last year’s New York Times bestselling book, “Climate of Hope: How Cities, Businesses, and Citizens Can Save the Planet.”

dish-012915-hugh-achesonCelebrity chef Hugh Acheson has an exciting new cookbook titled, “The Chef and the Slow Cooker.” He has been traveling the country to promote the book, including making an appearance in Atlanta, Georgia last month.

Acheson was at Ponce City Market for a book signing on January 25th. He signed copies beginning at 6 p.m. on the market’s second floor at the Atlanta Gallery Collective.

Tickets included a copy of the book and a 5×7 photo from Erik Tanner’s James Beard portrait series. A huge crowd of Acheson’s fans from across the country were in attendance.

Stafford has made various appearances promoting the book, including stopping by Homewood, Alabama for a book signing on February 2nd. The event was held in conjunction with Books-A-Million at Trinity United Methodist Church.

Ticket proceeds benefited a variety of local charities. Books-A-Million also donated part of the money from book sales.

nbzLqibK_400x400Brookings Institution Director John Hudak was in Richmond, Virginia last month to address an event that dealt with the future of marijuana. He was the keynote speaker at the Virginia Cannabis Conference.

The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws organized the proceedings. They were seeking to decriminalize possession and expand medical access to marijuana.

After hearing from Hudak and others, attendees lobbied officials at the state Capitol. They met with legislators and attended Senate and House sessions.

Hudak serves as the Brookings Institution’s deputy director of the Center for Effective Public Management. He is the author of “Marijuana: A Short History.”

downloadThe Dallas Mavericks are adding an extra jolt of excitement to this year’s Mavs Ball. Internationally-recognized comedian Cedric the Entertainer will be the evening’s special performer.

The event takes place on March 3rd at Canton Hall in The Factory Ballroom. Attendees get the opportunity to mingle the 2017-18 Mavs team.

Individual tickets are $500 and a table of ten is $5,000. The night is billed as “a blue tie affair” to play off the Mavericks signature team color.

Hillerman signed copies of the book at Full Circle Bookstore on January 20th from 3-5 p.m. An enthusiastic crowd of fans met one of their favorite authors when she arrived.

Song of the Lion is her third crime novel featuring characters that were originally conceived by her father, bestselling author Tony Hillerman. The book is being released in paperback today.

Before becoming a novelist, Hillerman was a newspaper journalist in New Mexico for The Santa Fe New Mexican and the Albuquerque Journal. Her first books were most related to New Mexico travel.

The event took place at 7 p.m. at the Wes Watkins Center. As she does during many of her engagements, Guerrero was able to share her powerful thoughts on immigration reform.

OSU students, faculty and staff could attend the event for free. Admission for the rest of the general public was $10.

Guerrero currently stars at Maritza Ramos in Orange is the New Black and Lina Santillan in Jane the Virgin. With OITNB, she has been part of a cast that has won three straight Screen Actors Guild Awards.

The 21st series kicked off in January and Urrea will speak on April 3rd at the Aspen Institute’s Paepcke Auditorium. In addition to speaking, he will also hold a book signing

Individual event tickets are $25 and series passes are also available. Tickets are also free to students between the ages of 14-24.

Urrea has written 17 bestselling books. He is also a poet and essayist who was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for nonfiction in 2005.

That made him an ideal choice to serve as keynote speaker at an MLK Day Candlelight Vigil held at Northwestern University.

The event was hosted by NU’s Alpha Mu Chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. There were over 100 people in attendance.

Thompson also shared stories about his background and talked about education. In addition to his presentation, there were musical performances and readings of King’s writings.

Lynch served as the keynote speaker at Wayne State University’s Martin Luther King Jr. Tribute. The event was held on January 12th at the Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Theater.
